Imagining the Demonic

Throughout this lecture, ideas were discussed to get us thinking in a different way about how we percieve people. As the face is the key part of identification, we find some features easier on the eye than others.

Colour association is important, as it is a quick way of us placing something into a category we are familiar with. Red for example is associated with blood, hell, or the devil. FOr my character I wan to choose cold purple tones, to give a lifeless feel, whoch is the reason my character must feed upon the flesh and blood of warm blooded animals.

The idea of a second face comes from a painting of the devil, where a second face appears on his stomach. This idea could relate to my project as she id a human hybrid, going through the transformation process, making her, essentially, have two faces.

An interesting point I hadn't realised, is that those with larger pupils are more appealing, as the pupil dilates if you love someone, seeing them makes your eyes appear bigger. so in relation to this emotion, they appear softer, making them more appaealing. When seeing monsters of characters who are suposed to be demonic, will usually have small puils, to make their iris more intense and uncomfortable to look at.

This inspired me to think further into my character. I originally though I may use eye cnitacts to simply change to colour of the iris to someting more unnatural, however this may not be entirely the most successful way to create a monstrous look, but to change the pupil size, may be more subtle and effective, or perhaps a combination of the two. From this I can experiment with photoshop and see which makes my character come to life, in the most sinister way.

Johann Casper Lavater's Essay on Physiognomy

"Psychologists tell us that the external demons that terrorise us are ocen projec5ons. Fears of our own impulses, wishes, and capaci5es, fears of what we cannot control in ourselves. If that is true than the make-up ar5sts’ vampires, zombies and grotesques are mirrors. Recognise this, we find our iden5ty in these transforma5ons just as we exorcise fear by indulging it." Morawetz, 2011.

This is an interesting quote when thinking about our identity and ho we are percieved. From this, I want to see how I can mannipulate my characters features to see what makes her look truly sinister or even devilish. I will try and change her eye colour to a bold yellow of a fiery colour, withtin this I intned to create the impression of pin-head pupils, which are suggested to be most frighteneing as they are the very opposite of the large pupils we see when we feel admiration, affection or love.
