Dark Souls: Concept & Artworks

Looking through the design works of Dark Souls,

It's interesting to see that within the concept designs, the surroudings are included, which I think would help to fit the creature within its environment. This would also help with consideration of what features the character may have. For example, I imagine my character to be living inthe woods, so I imagine her to have a pale appearance as she wouldn't see the sunlight.

Other features such as their clothing would also be considered. Dark Souls refelcts a medieval era, where knights with armour are seen throughout the artwork. This character appears heroic in comparision to those who he fights. The skeletons appear xombie-like as they still have some flesh remains on their bones.

This image is interesting because simply by looking at it, I can imagine that this dragon could be a part of the architecture. This may relate back to old tales where dragons were part of bridges etc. Its appearance is very worn and aged, it loooks organic as the moss and textures seem to replicate earthy materials.

This collection of images displays various human-hybrids. Or at least creatures who resemble the figure of a human being.

The top left seems to be a recreation of the  mythical beast

Egyptian god Khnum or the Ox-head from Chinese mythology, the left image shows a combination of an already recognseable gargoyle style creature, it appears more human because of its posture and muschule groups on the body.

The variation of character concepts above were interesting to look at, as once again, they each had characteristics I felt I could relate to certain environments and roles. The mossy armoured character iint he left reminds me of a temple, where the forest has taken over. Some scenery in relation to this is seen in the game where you would come across these particular characters.

The mushroom characters on the right are interesting because it is very obvious what they are. Usually in games the camouflaged characters are the troublesome ones who you dont wan't to come across. Perhaps this is the same in film and TV too - as far fantasy is concerned.

From looking at these artworks, I have discovered the importance of the creatures environment being reflected in the appearance of the character themselves.

The images on the left are all very different combinations of human hybrids. These show different extremities of human hybrids and the limitless combinations.
