Female Monsters

Interestingly, when researching the phrase 'female beast' many of the results displayed intense image sof women who bodybuild. Some extreme physiques display an astounding amount of muscle, losing the meninine appearance, and developing a much more masculine shape. However these women continue their beauty routines, and strive to be stronger versions of themselves. This in itslef is interesting because there doesn't seem to be a line to cross when we stop recognising the female.

Coudray, C. B. du (2006)

These images taken from Cordurays Curse of the Werewolf display images of the representation of women when associated with monsters. Interestingly, between 1932 and 1927 and 1938, subtle changes to these illustrations were made, making the women appear more curvy, attractive and possibly sexualised, althoug all of these covers are supposed to be in relation to wolves. Each woman looks pretty and appealing, but this was not what I expected when seeing the title 'Women who run with wolves'.

Medusa - Wrath of the Titans, Joe Whiteaker (2010)

There is a dramatic difference between both Medusas we see below, to the left 2010's Medusa appears quite sexualised and attractive for a CGI figure. She has an attractive face and a slim, desirable figure, other than her snake tail.

Medusa - Wrath of the Titans, Desmond Davis (1981)

Here we have a very different MEdusa as she is a puppet who to me looks terrifying. This may be related to 'the uncanny valley' as I feel that they ahve tried to create something human so closely that it looks wrong and unsettling. However she still plays the same role and has a long figure, breasts and a chiseled face. However they definitely reflect the times in which they were created.

Ginger - Ginger Snaps, John Fawcett (2000)

Here is a more modern idea of a shape-shifting creature. We do not see her transform, but we do see her becoming a powerful person, especially when she overpowers a young man, sexually. This grotesque image we are displayed with here, gives a realistic feel as she is still human, yet covered in the blood of another.

Mermaids - Pirates of The Carribbean:On Stranger Tides, Rob Marshall (2011)

Here is a typical mytho of the mermaid. As children we are bought up to think of mermaids as beautifulwomen who live in the sea. Howver a more sinister idea is bought forward in Pirates of the Caribbean. MErmaids try to lure men into the water with their beauty and gentle singing voice. This seems an odd place for something so 'beautiful' to be as they are in fact seen in very dark caved areas.

The following images are screen shots from the films.
