Evaluation

Throughout this unit, I have learnt how to use new materials and techniques in order to produce the makeup and effects I wanted to achieve. This project was purposely chosen for me to enable myself to develop professional skills to a higher standard, to recreate realistic prosthetics which can be interacted with for film purposes.

Using new materials and techniques such as Gafquat as an alternative to making a wig, was an interesting challenge which I was glad to use within my makeup. I would like to develop my skills with this material, as I feel it had great potential for my makeup, but unfortunately this was let down by lack of practice.

I would like to develop my skills further and excel in using other materials such as Foam latex as I think this material in particular would be ideal for larger and potentially heavy prosthetics. Looking back at my personal project, I would have liked to have done more tests and experiments to help avoid the issues I had during the assessment. Although I was unhappy with the result of my assessment, I feel that I have learnt a lot from it and I know where I went wrong and how these issues can be prevented I the future.

It was difficult to start this project and the negotiation seemed unclear, however once my idea was discussed I was happy to get on with my makeups and research to support them. Having more time would have been helpful for me to be able to make changes such as how my fatty hip piece was sculpted. It was too bulky on the curve of the body, which I knew was the reason for the piece pulling itself off. I also think a lighter material such as foam latex would have been more suited to this piece, as my design showed that it would be a large appliance. If I were to use foam latex, I know that I would have needed plenty of practice with colouring it as I struggled in the previous project to get it to match skin tones. If I were to change the wound appliance, I would have matched it to the fatty hip to create a balance in weight which was noticeably different once both pieces were applied to my model. Also I found that pros-aide may not have been the best adhesive, so next time I may invest in Telesis, a silicone purpose adhesive.

I am happy with how this project went when looking at what I have learnt. I will continue to try and make realistic, subtle prosthetics, as I find this more pleasing and satisfying when appliances are untraceable.
