Cleaning and Preparing moulds for running

To clean up and prepare my moulds for running silicone there were three steps

  • De-mould

  • Vibrasaw

  • Sanding down

  • Drilling bolt holes

Demoulding

Using a chisel, I steadily leavered the edge of my fibreglass mould, at different points around the edge to help it release itself.

Vibrasaw

The vibrasaw is the easiest way to neaten up moulds but sawing of any excess fibreglass and rough edges where fibreglass may splinter.

Sanding down

Using a higher grade sandpaper (rougher) i smoothed the edges of my fibreglass to enusure there were no splinters or rough edges which may make them uncomfortable to handle.

Drilling bolt holes

Using a marker, I marked on where my touch downs are on my mould and snapped together the mould and core. This was a clearer way of seeing where to drill bolt holes. Using a 6mm drill bit, I drilled holes at each point, ensuring the two fibreglass parts were correctly aligned.
