Kathoey

The term Kathoey comes from the Thai term which refers to transgender.

This is oftern refered to as a third gender and this is becaus ethe Thai have a more general idea of gender within their culture. This reflects their attitudes as it seems they feel that gender is less important, so they instead, rely on personal choice of representation.

It i said that a woman is not allowed to change their identity on records such as birth certificate and passport, as they would be sent to prison for this.

There is a University in Bangkok which encourages transexuals to attend and perform, dressed as ladies. This shows that young people are able to choose this life if they wish, which is then encouraged and aided to help them along this path.

In Thailand, it appears that they can live so freely as they are not vunerable to critisism. This is seen as the norm.

The Concept of Beauty

Laura Cotterill

Beauty is both a mixture of personal taste and universal rules.

There isn't necessarily a definition of what is and what isn't beautiful. However as a society, we are blinded by what is considered beautiful.

The idea of beauty is projectin at the public through film, music, magazines and advertisement. We are so highly influenced of what the ideal is,

Majority of images and videos we see of celebrities and models, are touched up images to enhance their appearance. This is scary as it means we no longer know what is real and what is not. The people we see on TV and in magazines aren't real.

Dr. Marquardt's Mask.

Marquardts mask gives a guideline ot the perfect face. If your face fits and lines up with it, you are deemed more beautiful.

Symmetry is a key feature to being beutiful. Softer faces, bigger eyes and fuller lips all contribute to what we think is beautiful.

In society we are constantly reminded of what we are lead to believe, is beautiful. The media display a range of beautiful people, indirectly or not so indirectly, pressurising the public to look a certain way.

Endless amounts of besuty products are also advertised by those who are already the face of magazines, as they are already beutiful.

Ideas of beauty tend to come in waves, an example would be Mick Jaggers daughter, who bought forward the gapped tooth trend in advertising for Rimmel London. Before this break thorough, this was a feature many people have corrected.
