The Advent of Television

Nan Winton, first female newsreader for BBC

In 1960, Nan Winton read the 9 o'clock news for the BBC on Sundays. having a woman read the news simply “wasn’t acceptable”.

Winton was removed and reinstated three times whilst working at the BBC and eventually moved over to iTV where she felt she was treated more equally. (Hiil, J. 2013)

It was from then, that BBC viewers had become used to seeing a female newsreader, and therefore was more open to this idea to keep the public happy.

The 1950's were a productive time for women in television news, this was also a time for launching womens careers

(Murray, G. 2014.)

Other women, listed below, were other well known newsreaders between 1955 and 1988:

-Anglea Rippon

-Barbara Madell

-Armine Sandford

-Mary Marquis

Commercials

Vintage adverts display a ray of offensive, sexist and racist ideas. Most of these are a felction of what the life of a white man should entail. This also links to unacceptable stereotypes of gender, race and disabilities.

Chickenshed Theatre

Is a complete turn around for who are displayed on television. The advertisement for the Chickenshed Theatre itself shows a mixture of genders, race and disabilities all working together as a small community.
The purpose of the Chickenshed is to bring poeple together, to encourage collaborative ideas between gender, race and disabilities.

Fashion and Editorial

For years only white models were used in magazines. Naomi Campbell was the first black model to appear on Vogue magazines cover.

Reasons for this have been: majority of people are white, so the magazine advrtises for the majority

Whites were stereotyped the most beautiful, this is why skin bleaching has come forward

Brookside, Corronation Street, The Accused

All display what was once discriminated against to be on television at all. Still to this day people are being discriminated again but it is being encouraged to be accepted as they are presented on everyday soaps with equal roles as every other character seen in the programmes.

In all three of these programmes, homosexual relationships are represented, and particularly in  Corrornation Street, their lesbian story went viral, as it shocked the public. Since, it has gone quiet and has been accepted as this is part of the characters in the soap, who remain to be seen in a homosexual relationship.

The Accused was a good example of how transvestite people may live their lives. This may be shocking to some viewers, however if uncomfortable with the idea, the public simply don't have to watch. On the other hand, it is refreshing to see that such stories can be broadcasted on television ans be watched by some people, perhaps to gain an understanding.
