CHARACTER 1 - BRAIN COVER

Vac form

Due to the shell being ridgid, it was hard to place in the correct place without having a reinforced edge for it to pop into. Instead it hovered on top of the brain and it didn't work as it left a gap around the sides unless I pushed it down.

Crystal Clear

As an alternative, I thought I would try and make a flexible shell. Using a crystal clear adhesive, I smoothed a layer on top of my fibreglass brain and on top of the vacform copy too so I could compare them.

I had issues removing the product from both the fibreglass and vac form even though I did release them first using vaseline and macwax.

I tried directly applying the crystal clear to my practice head, I found that the application wasn't as smooth as I would have liked. Small airbubbles are created underneath as it is a gel-like substance.

Also as I tried to thicken the shell, it became more opaque, defeating the purpose of it.

Clear Casting Resin

I decided to see if clear casting resion would work. I was hoping that I would be able to pre-make the lid on a different head, then remove it and place it on my makeup. However I had issues removing the resin, so I tried creating one using my vac form, which also got stuck and the resin layer was too think as I needed to allow 24hrs every time I did a layer, but at this point I ran out of time.

The image on the left looks appropriate for what I wanted to achieve, however it meant that the makeup would become ridgid and difficult to apply, risking ripping the foam latex. On the right is part of the resin from my vacform mould, which I think could have worked as i bent the vacform to fit the head better. I just needed more time to rectify this issue. I think this was the best option as I could remove it and place it on the makeup.

EXPERIMENT 4

After having issues with the vacform, I thought I would ask Pete if he could recommend any product for this specific job. I asked for something crystal clear and flexible. As a result he said he had used a crystal clear sealer, so I thought I woudl give this a go as I thought it would be appropriate if this would be a flexible lid for the brain.
