ELYSIUM
On the right, images taken from the film Elysium itself.
Below are images of concept art by Ben Mauro.
This film was a perfect reference for creating a concept for a world where humans are becoming more advanced with technology.
This film explores ideas of the rich beaing able to flea a dieing world, leaving the poor behind to suffer.
Robots are being used to control and watch earth, meanwhile the rich are safe on their new man made planet.
The images below on the right are images taken from the concept art. These are a very clear representation of how the filma was intended to look and how each character in it shows represents the contrast in the two worlds thay are divided into.

HUMANS
Humans is a channel 4 series looking at human synthetics in the home. They're used as maids, nannies, cooks, cleaners and carers.
These characters are very realistic looking other than their eyes. They are flawless and extremely well kept and groomed. It isn't until they respond or try to interact with people that we notice that they're not humans. However a small group in particular has been programmed to be concious, making them aware of feelings and memories.

The images on the right are concept images created by Ben Mauro for Altered Carbon. Inspired by Richard K Morgans novel.
These concepts explore nother view of what a human cyborg could look like. The small plugs and barcode on the skin give an indication of the future becoming a land for machines, recognised by numbers.

Mauro, B. (2009)
Robocops character is created after he needing his body replaces from an explosion casualty.
The images on the right show images of how his brain has been mannipulated to control his new mechanical body.
These images were particulary inspiring to me to get a close up of the brain itslef and how the inserted panels look. Looking at this his character is quite obviously a heroic figure. His new bod makes him bigger and stronger. The face pieces look like a hero suit, similar to Iron Man.
The machine is a film which discovers issues once developing Artificial Inteligence too far and becomes capable of killing on demand.
Looking at this film showed a dffernt view on what people see as a 'future human'. Her appearance seems clean and uman other than her glowing eyes. Her body movement also distorts the idea of her being human.
The images on the right show a selection of artificial inteligence. From the left we see the creation process og the machine. The last image shows how body parts are being used to help people who need prosthetic limbs. This example playing the guitar, shows just how brilliant the level of inteligence is as we hear them discuss him emotions being heard through the music his fingers play.
Ex Machina is another experimental Artificial Inteligence film. Within this film we see mannioulative experimentation between a programmer and the android. He becomes attached to this particular android and soon discovers there are others being abused and kept locked away.
As Ava is the most inteligent yet, she is aamant to escape as she knows and believes theres more for her to see.
The aesthetics of this character are very much mechanical however the mesh is sculpted to give a very feminine figure.
Her face too is very human like.
The Entire History of You was an episode from the Black Mirror series on channel 4. Within this episode, everyone has built in memory which can be replayed or deleted. Each has a control to be able to play back memories on demand and even display them to others.
Whilst watching this, there is nothing visible suggesting that these humans have implants. However eyes light up whilst searching into their minds for particular memories. With this implant comes many issues as people are able to see each others memories. For example the protagonist forces his partner to show footage of her cheating on him.
As a make-up It hought something as subtle as this would rely on CGI, leaving makeup very simple. So i had to look for methods of creating subtle but different features that trigger that my characters are cyborgs.

Sommers, S. (2004) Van Helsing
Van Helsing displayed a few different types of characters, but the frankenstein style creature was a very stereotypical monster
Electricity powering his bodu
His actions are bold and threatening
He appears monstous because he is imperfect
He cannot speak or communicate as humans do

McGuigan, P. (2015)
Appears human
Human baody parts put together
These makeups are differnt human hybrids, however both artificial intelligence and Frankensteins creation are means to recreate life. Theyre both achieved successfully and unsuccessfully. Both creations become a danger however acomplishemnts of movement are made.
Becomes dangerous and seems unaware of its actions
Misunderstood and makes us feel sympathetic
